About Shanghai Diamond Garden

Shanghai Diamond Garden is a unique dining destination located at 9401 W Pico Blvd in Los Angeles, CA, that masterfully blends authentic Shanghainese and Chinese cuisine with strict kosher dietary laws. Established in the heart of the Pico-Robertson neighborhood, a vibrant area known for its significant Jewish community, this restaurant has carved out a distinctive niche by offering kosher Chinese food, a rare combination that appeals to both lovers of traditional Chinese flavors and those who observe kosher dietary restrictions. The restaurant’s commitment to maintaining kosher standards while delivering the rich, bold flavors of Chinese cooking sets it apart in the Los Angeles dining scene.

The journey of Shanghai Diamond Garden began when Wilson Chan, a Hong Kong native, took over the establishment in 1995. Initially operating as a conventional Chinese restaurant, Chan recognized the shifting demographics and cultural landscape of the neighborhood, which increasingly embraced Orthodox Jewish traditions. To better serve the community and meet the demand for kosher dining options, he transformed the restaurant into a kosher-certified establishment. This transition required significant adjustments, including the removal of popular non-kosher dishes such as barbecued pork, garlic shrimp, and lobster, to comply with kosher laws. Despite these challenges, the restaurant has thrived by focusing on dishes that honor both culinary traditions, creating a bridge between two distinct cultures through food.

Shanghai Diamond Garden’s menu is a testament to this fusion, featuring beloved Chinese dishes prepared with kosher ingredients and methods. Signature offerings include Kung Pao Chicken, Moo Shu Beef, Egg Flower Soup, and Orange Chicken, all crafted with fresh, low-sodium soy sauce and low-cholesterol oils to promote healthier dining. The restaurant also caters to diverse dietary needs by providing vegetarian and gluten-free options, ensuring that every guest can find something delicious and suitable. The kitchen operates with meticulous care, overseen by a mashgiach (kosher supervisor) who ensures that all food preparation adheres to kosher standards, a process that becomes especially rigorous during peak times such as Christmas Eve, when the restaurant experiences a surge in orders from customers following the tradition of eating Chinese food on Christmas.

Beyond its culinary offerings, Shanghai Diamond Garden is known for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for casual lunches, family dinners, and special occasions. The restaurant’s 120-seat capacity allows it to accommodate both intimate gatherings and larger groups, fostering a sense of community among its patrons. Its location in Los Angeles, a city celebrated for its diverse food culture, positions Shanghai Diamond Garden as a standout venue where cultural heritage and culinary innovation intersect.

In addition to dine-in service, Shanghai Diamond Garden offers convenient takeout and delivery options, serving neighborhoods such as Pico-Robertson, Beverlywood, and Century City. This flexibility has helped the restaurant maintain a loyal customer base that appreciates the ease of enjoying kosher Chinese cuisine from the comfort of their homes. Operating hours are designed to accommodate various schedules, with lunch and dinner service available Monday through Thursday, limited hours on Friday in observance of the Sabbath, and full service on Sundays.

With a dedicated phone line at +1 310-553-0998, Shanghai Diamond Garden invites both longtime fans and new visitors to experience its unique culinary offerings. The restaurant’s blend of authentic Shanghainese flavors and kosher preparation not only satisfies appetites but also celebrates the rich cultural tapestry of Los Angeles, making it a cherished dining destination for those seeking something truly special.

The food was terrible. I placed a large order and ended up throwing everything away. Absolutely disgusting. Considering how expensive it is, the quality is unacceptable. They’d be better off closing the restaurant than serving food like this. I definitely do not recommend this place πŸ‘ŽπŸ».

Best Kosher food in Los Angeles and it's not even close. everything I've tried on their menu over the last three months since I got here has been amazing. The only hard thing is deciding what to get.

Food is excellent, service is fast and prices are good. Gave 4/5 stars cuz the ambiance and lighting needs updating - it’s quite dated and ugly. We got chicken dumpling soup (healthy, plain, decent), sizzling chicken (excellent!), chicken & snow peas (healthy, good), meat dumplings (great).

Overall nice lunch spot. 4 stars as I was going to order sushi but was informed it starts at 5pm not available for lunch :-( so I got the eggplant lunch dish and it was good! Big portion and tasty. No complaints and helpful waiters. The bathrooms were big and clean but the floors were sticky so that was another reason for the 4/5 review. Overall nice place!

Incredible to say the least. Such a classic spot. Authentic American Chinese delicacies. White table cloths. Comfy booths. Your childhood Chinese spot. And it’s kosher. Can’t beat it. I’d eat here even if I didn’t keep kosher.
